"THE KIPLING FILE" by SUDHIR KAKAR - book review

๐Ÿ‘‰ This story is initially set in Lahore which was one of the cultural hubs during the times of British rule in India. Sudhir Kakar has successfully shuffled  the elements of that time in a way the story needed to portray its characters.

๐Ÿ‘‰Here, Kay Robinson is being dropped to the position of an Editor from Allahabad to Lahore as the editor of Civil and Military Gazette where he is assisted by the young Ruddy who goes by the name of Rudyard Kipling.

๐Ÿ‘‰But this was not their first meet and they were literally riveted to each other by the bond of friendship which soon took flight in the sky with more comfort. In this book Kay narrates the life of Ruddy who is Amazonite among the pebbles. Not only this, he was too impressed by Ruddy in respect to his enthralling writing skills whereas Ruddy too wants to become a  writer but his previous boss under whom he was working was not that generous to appreciate his writing as Kay does. He often dismissed Kipling's writing as ostentatious and rashfull but Kay was always there to acknowledge his drafts and encourage him by emitting appreciation and understanding so far which was enough to act as a base for their developing bond.

๐Ÿ‘‰This copious element of friendship soon took Kay to Ruddy's family and soon he fell for his younger sister Trix.

๐Ÿ‘‰So this narration continues but circumstances of course not remains same.

At  times their bond emerges as unbreakable as they start accompanying each other on clubs, family dinner, vacations and even through letters; but acknowledgement of Trix's matter acted as drill to lay a hole in their bond as well as Anglo-Indian life in Punjab was continuing to launch its elements and unfolded many aspects which shaped the further story of Kay as well as Ruddy, a genius who is impeded by his inner demons at point of times in respect to his parents or his childhood life and many other things.

๐Ÿ‘‰This was a very different read which provided me with an exposure to anti-colonial sentiment as well as unfolded the folds of 1880's.
